Noise, Silence, What Now #2: KOHMA + Experimental Turntablism Workshop

March 3rd, 2018

Ngallery continued to explore the themes of the cycle Noise, Silence, What Now by hosting KOHMA, the band of George Mizithras and George Kokkinaris. KOHMA presented an original workshop and a concert with their work on sound art and musical improvisation. Between the two parts, Virginie Viel set up her pop-up kitchen to serve her dishes.
The Experimental Turntablism Workshop explored the use of turntables and vinyl records as experimental music tools. Participants broke and reassembled discs, added objects to them, and tampered with turntables. They also explored at the interdependence of audio, visual and tactile qualities of records and how these qualities can lead to new creative forms. The workshop did not require any prerequisite knowledge, skills or materials. Participants brought their records without restriction on the type of music to ruin and experiment with them. The workshop was presented by George Mizithras (MIZI).
KOHMA is a free improvisation band with George Mizithras (aka MIZI – 0-input mixer, tapes, probing devices, toys crack) and George Kokkinaris at double bass. KOHMA researches the combination of electronic and acoustic sound. Sounds from everyday life, urban sounds, television and radio sounds, midnight silence etc, are all recorded on tape and converted in low-fi sound objects. Combined with electronically generated sounds, they consist of the main performance material. The acoustic instrument responds to every electronic sound, and tries to avoid its traditional role by being in constant harmony or counterpoint.
